The year 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The Space Exploration sale at Sotheby’s presents images that chronicle the historic events leading up to the first steps on the moon. As someone who is fascinated with space and our innate desire to explore it, I am always eager to work on this annual sale.
A6L Apollo Spacesuit Prototype:
An early stage two piece prototype made in 1967, the A6L Apollo Spacesuit ended up being a more involved edit than expected. The only way to shoot the suit was to have someone wear it, so it was up to me to remove the subject and make it appear as if she was never inside. The hands and feet were no issue, the head proved to be the most tedious.

To Everyone Who I Helped I Salute You, Alan Bean:
“One of the great things about the universe is that it’s fair.”

This painting by Alan Bean takes its inspiration from the last mission of NASA Apollo program, Apollo 17. The initial shot for this image was too dark and gloomy. The company requested I silhouette the piece on white and make it much brighter. On top of that I also removed a lot of black from the blue and saturated color overall. The yellow and blues were the most drastic changes.
